Flüstern von Bräut’gam und nächstem Jahr.

Das Mägdlein horchet, es rauscht im Baum;

Many lovely blossoms it bears;

The Tokyo String Quartet has finished their last concert at 92Y tonight, to an appreciative full house. In July, they will retire an extraordinary 44-year career.

The Tokyo String Quartet first performed at 92Y in 1977. It became the 92Y quartet-in-residence in 2003. In those years, they played 31 concerts and 101 works by 20 composers to thousands of fans. Tonight we bid farewell to this remarkable ensemble. Together, we thank the Tokyo for the enlightenment, insight and sheer pleasure they have brought into our lives. We look forward to welcoming them back to 92Y as individuals and friends in the years to come.

When I ask how often the quartet has been to Australia, they exchange glances. “We were just talking about it,” says Isomura. “We couldn’t decide if this would be the sixth or seventh time – something like that.” He and Ikeda recall their first Australian tour in the 1970s. Australian tours have been an integral part of the ensemble’s existence, and something they have always looked forward to.

“The warmth of Australian audiences is just astonishing,” says Greensmith.“Audiences are incredibly involved in the concerts, Musica Viva is an astonishingly active organisation, and the concert halls are magnificent.”

“This new recording of the Cello Concerto No. 1, Op. 107 by Dmitri Shostakovich is all the more appealing due to cellist Emmanuelle Bertrand’s warm, elastic, and expressive playing. Not to say that some of her male counterparts do not display as much expressive power within their readings, it’s just that they seem to inject a bit more of a “steely” edge to theirs which, mind you, fits Shostakovich’s temperament very well. But it’s nice to hear an interpretation scrutinized with a warm heart rather than a cold intellect. Under Bertrand’s hands, the cello takes on an almost human character, a living voice. Take for example the last few minutes of the slow movement, where the instrument sounds like a child whimpering from fear, as if forsaken and abandoned to the world. It’s moments like this of deep expression that grab your attention.”

It’s a bit breathy at times, but very warm…The string playing in particular is really quite lovely. There is equally gorgeous playing in the Brahms String Quartet No.2 in A minor, Op.51 No.2. “At the time of writing, the renowned Tokyo Quartet has just given its farewell performances in Toronto, a city it has visited some 45 times during its long career. Its final concert will be at Yale University in June. The ensemble’s farewell CD of quartets by Dvořák and Smetana has just been issued by harmonia mundi (807429), with impassioned performances of Dvořák’s Quartet No.12, Op.96 (“The American”) and Smetana’s painfully personal Quartet No.1 in E minor, “From My Life.” It certainly wasn’t their final recording, however. While these quartets were recorded in 2006, the glorious performance of the autumnal Brahms Clarinet Quintet, also on the harmonia mundi label and reviewed here last December, was recorded in 2011, and if anything, has a much greater feeling of wistful farewell about it. Still, either CD will stand as a testament to the standard this remarkable group attained, and to the loss their retirement represents to the chamber music world.”
